turtle-terengganu

little known haven of Terengganu to 1.7 miles of beach and 70 hectares of sand plain is flat Ma 'Daerah. This colony of turtles is nestled in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, between the towns of Kerteh and Paka. The Ma 'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary, in the district of Kemaman is located within the colony-Paka Kerteh and has always been an important turtle nesting beach for four species of sea turtles in Malaysia. However, because of rife in coastal development over the past 30 years, the number of turtles nesting in the colony have reduced significantly. Ma 'Daerah existence as a haven for nesting turtles is now critical. In June 1999, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, BP and WWF-Malaysia has decided to Ma 'Daerah model in a turtle conservation center in Malaysia. Outside the turtle hatchery management and monitoring of the nesting female, other activities at the shelter for nesting turtles education and awareness particularly for students and the local community
