Rantau Abang Dungun

At 22 km north of K. Dungun and 80 km south of K. Terengganu, is probably the most talked about tourism in Terengganu. There was a time when a large number of giant leatherback turtles Rantau Abang has to lay their eggs between May and August. (Peak spawning months of June and July). The beach here is favorable ground because it has a steep and deep, so that the turtle can "territory" straight to the beach. If the beach is a little steep and gradual, the turtle would spend much of its energy wading through a fair distance before finding a nesting site closest to the line of vegetation. It must retain as much energy as possible to what it has to do later. The mother has turtles in the coverage of night to lay her eggs. The leatherback turtle can reach a length of 2m and easily weigh up to 500 kg. Unlike other species of turtles have bony hard shells, they are soft, leather or shells of the carapace with 7 peaks to the length. The design and shape of the shell and reduces the friction of the water with fins along to help propel the turtle in the water without problem. This is a more appropriate for these long-distance swimmers have to travel through all major oceans of 2 to 3 years to return to the same field. It is estimated that the long distance travel is related to seasonal drift of jellyfish.
